Mass Media in the Basque Language

    What is the role of mass media in the Basque Country?

Media have an importan role, because they are very helpful for the spread of the Basque  language. So if media wouldn't exist, it is hard to imagine what would happen to our language.

    Most of people who watch TV in Basque are adults or children, and sometimes young people. But the main reason is that the programs they offer are not very varied. If, for example, EITB would offer the same programs as MTV, probably the audience wouldn't mind what channel to watch, and maybe people who don't usually speak Basque  would maybe start using more Basque due to the influence of that certain media.

    But media is not only the TV. Radio has a big number of listeners as well. That's because they offer things for young people too. For example, Gaztea Irratia is a Basque radio station focused on a young audience, that offers a wide range of music and programs in Basque, which is positive for young people.

    Press is different because it is mostly read by adult people,due to the content. But young people usually read more magazines. They should try to offer more youth-focused magazines, so the number of readers would probably increase.

    To conclude, we think that media is a good tool to keep and/or increase the use of Basque language, but the problem is that not all the different types of media are directed to all ranges of society, so that sohuld be changed in order to promote the language and its usage.
